The Virginia Distillery Co. expects to be selling a Scotch-style malt whiskey not far from the Blue Ridge Mountains within five years.
Partners Chris Allwood, Joe Hungate and Brian Gray plan to invest $5 million to build the distillery in Lovingston, Va., by the end of the year. In addition to the distillery, the property will have a visitor’s center, warehouse, nature trails and a barley farm. In the meantime the trio is importing Eades Whisky from Scotland.
Located in Nelson County, the distillery will be near several Virginia wineries and breweries.

Like many others this holiday season, I hosted a holiday party. In an attempt to be incredibly classy and ultra sophisticated, I distinguished this party from the others that I typically throw. This wasn’t going to be a beer guzzling, hotdog roasting type event- this was a cocktail party. I sent out fancy invitations and even purchased red and green cocktail napkins depicting partridges in what I assume to be pear trees. I stocked up on fancy hors d’oeuvres and plenty of mixers…and then there was the booze. I spent more cash at the liquor store than I did on most of my family’s gifts. As I perused the aisles wondering how much of each spirit I should have on hand, I recalled my friends who would be attending. I thought that I knew their tastes and I chose accordingly. The party was a huge success and it led me to major realization… gin is in!

Lemon and orange juices combine for a sweet rendition of a Martini. For a sweeter cocktail use a larger dash of grenadine.
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 oz gin
- 1 oz lemon juice
- 1 oz orange juice

This classic mixed drink is much like a New Orleans Fizz. The Gin Fizz has a very light sour citrus flavor unlike the orange of the New Orleans version.
INGREDIENTS:
- 2 oz gin
- dash of lemon or lime juice
- 1/2 tsp superfine sugar
- 1 oz sour mix
- 1 egg white (optional)
- soda water
- maraschino cherry for garnish

This is a beautiful frozen drink that is non-alcoholic so you can enjoy it anytime without any worries. The Virgin Miami Vice is comprised of a layer of blended coconut and pineapple topped with a blended layer of strawberry and lime. This one is absolutely delicious and is one of the great frozen mocktail recipes in Maran Illustrated Bartending.
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 oz pineapple juice
- 1 oz coconut cream
- 1/2 oz half & half cream
- 1 1/2 oz strawberry puree
- 1 1/2 oz lime juice
- 1/4 oz simple syrup
- 1 cup ice, crushed
- strawberry for garnish
