The Pink Lady is a classic cocktail that has a light blush color contributed by the dashes of grenadine. It was one of the first "girly drinks" and a favorite of the high society ladies of the 30’s. The key to this drink (and any shaken with egg) is to shake it longer than you would with most cocktails to ensure that everything is mixed well. The egg also makes a great foamy top of the pink liquid, creating an intimate looking finished cocktail.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 1/2 oz gin
  • 3/4 oz applejack
  • 1/4 oz lemon juice
  • 1-2 dashes grenadine
  • 1 egg white
  • maraschino cherry for garnish

I finally got motivated, moved an old refrigerator that was left behind in my attic when I bought my house down to my basement, and turned it into a kegerator. Moving an old fridge down 4 narrow flights of stairs is not fun. I recommend you get your biggest friend and prepare to pay him in a lot of free beer. More to come on my kegerator set up; I’ll save that for a later post. So, I got the fridge set up, my CO2 tank filled, invited some friends and headed off to my local brewery to get a fresh keg of beer.

I doubt I’d call this a Margarita, beyond the tequila it does not have a Margarita element at all. Nonetheless, it is an excellent summertime dessert drink. The flavor is a complex mix of prickly pear, almond, raspberry and cream that features the sweetness of Voodoo Tiki Desert Rose Tequila, a prickly pear-infused spirit. The Pink Raspberry Margarita is equally great when served straight up, on the rocks or blended.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 oz Voodoo Tiki Desert Rose Tequila
  • 1 oz Tequila Rose
  • 1/2 oz crème de noyaux
  • 1/2 oz Chambord
  • 2 ½ oz cream
  • dash of grenadine
  • sugar for rimming
  • fresh raspberries or strawberries for garnish

Voters going to the polls in Mills River, N.C., will get the chance to cast ballots on three separate alcohol propositions next month.

Voters will decide on separate ballot questions that would permit the sale of beer and wine at convenience stores and supermarkets, and the sale of beer and wine at hotels and restaurants.

Proponents of the measures say local residents now drive out of town to buy beer and wine, which costs businesses additional sales and results in a loss of tax revenue for the community. The lack of ability to sell beer and wine is also given as a reason that some chain restaurants have not placed a location in the growing community.

The old saying "hair of the dog that bit you" is a common theory for curing a hangover. Most people choose a Bloody Mary, but the thick, red drink can be rather upsetting to look at, much less drink when you’re in the midst of a hellacious hangover. The Hair of the Dog cocktail is a great alternative that serves the same purpose: a little bit of alcohol, sour citrus and the hot digestive aid to calm the stomach. Unless you have a Bloody Mary mix on hand, Hair of the Dog is easier to mix, an attribute you’ll appreciate when your head is splitting and stomach is churning.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 6 oz Bulldog Gin
  • 1/2 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 2-3 dashes Tabasco sauce
  • slice of chili pepper
