The Mile High Manhattan is the ultra chic variation of the classic whiskey cocktail. The three distilled spirits (other than the anise liqueur) are called for by name for a reason, they are a spectacular marriage of flavor that substitutes just can’t touch. So, if you want to try this Manhattan you should have Maker’s Mark, Navan and Grand Marnier at hand. The anise liqueur can be any of the absinthe substitutes or the difficult to find (now legal in the US), Lucid. For less anise flavor you may want to try out the lighter-flavored Sambuca.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 4 parts Maker’s Mark bourbon
  • 1 part Navan Vanilla Liqueur
  • 1 part Grand Marnier
  • 3 or 4 drops of anise-flavored liqueur

Ward Eight is a classic bourbon sour with a hint of grenadine. Garnish with an orange and cherry flag by skewering both fruits on a cocktail pick. It’s assumed that the Ward Eight was created at Locke-Ober in Boston sometime in the year 1898. One of my favorite bourbons for this cocktail is Woodford Reserve, it add a smoky sweetness that pairs nicely with the sweet grenadine.

View video: How to Make a Ward Eight.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 oz bourbon
  • dash of grenadine
  • sour mix
  • orange slice for garnish
  • maraschino cherry for garnish

The Cantarito is a complex cousin of the Paloma and is another favorite of Mexico. This classic highball adds lemon and orange juice to the mix of tequila, lime and grapefruit soda. There are a few brands of soda out there that fit the bill, but Squirt is most commonly used. The juices make this cocktail and it’s always best with fresh squeezed juice.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 1/2 oz tequila
  • 1/2 oz fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 oz fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 oz fresh orange juice
  • grapefruit soda
  • lemon, lime and orange wedges for garnish
  • salt for rimming (optional)

If you like a White Russian you may really like a Colorado Bulldog. The only difference being that in this recipe you top with equal amount of cream and cola instead of cream alone. It really adds a nice touch that mixes up a routine of Russians.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 oz vodka
  • 1 oz coffee liqueur
  • cream or milk
  • cola
