An independent assessor has backed the Food Standards Agency’s refusal to allow the sale of ‘Sovio Wine’ in the UK.
The assessor was appointed by the FSA with the agreement of DB wines, the manufacturer of Sovio, to review the FSA’s decision to prevent the UK sale of the drink. The producers descibed the drink as a ‘naturally light semi-sparkling wine’ but it was made with a European-banned technique called ’spinning cone’ to reduce its alcohol content.

My boss called me into his office again to present me with another assignment: Drink this 750ml bottle of Bam Noire from the Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales Brewery, in Michigan, and write about it. Not being one to argue, that’s what I did. The bottle has a picture of a winged dog creature that looks like a Ralph Steadman drawing (beer drinkers, you will recognize this artist from the labels on bottles of beer from the Flying Dog brewery).

Figures released by the two largest wine grape producing states suggest that 2007 was a good year in the vineyards.
The California Department of Food and Agriculture forecast a harvest of 3.2 million tons, up under one percent from the previous year. Meanwhile, the Washington Association of Wine Grape Growers reports a record harvest of 127,150 tons, up 5.5 percent.
Two-thirds of all wine sold in the U.S. comes from California wineries. A total of 449 million gallons of California wine were sold in the U.S. in 2006 with an estimated retail value of $17.8 billion.
