Most beer lasts four to nine months on the shelf. How do you know the beer you are buying is fresh? If you’re purchasing a beer brewed by Anheuser-Busch (Budweiser, Bud Light, Michelob etc.) just check out the “Born on Date” to tell you when the beer was bottled. For all other brews, you may have a harder time trying to read the code on the side of the label. Other breweries use pull dates (the date after which a product should no longer be sold) or a Julian date system. Here is a great chart I found on this site to help you decipher the code.

I spent a few days on the Alabama coast recently, and stumbled upon a whiskey that was new to me – Clyde May’s Conecuh Ridge Alabama Style Whiskey. Being the curious sort, I tried some and asked my friendly bartender about it.This was a whiskey with an interesting story. The bartender told me that it was based on an old moonshine recipe, and was introduced by the moonshiner’s son. It was available for awhile, but then it wasn’t. Now the moonshiner’s family is no longer involved, and its not made in Alabama. Hmmm. I had to dig a bit deeper to find out more.

Researchers at Northwest Agricultural and Forestry University in Yangling, China, have developed genetically engineered grapes that they say delivers six times the amount of resveratrol found in regular grapes.
Resveratrol is a compound in red wine that researchers believe helps decrease heart disease rates and may have other health benefits. The problem is that standard grapes do not provide high enough levels of resveratrol.
The Chinese scientists were able to add an extra gene from a wild Chinese vine, which triggers increased resveratrol production and also helps grape vines fight common vineyard plant diseases.
It will likely be sometime before wine from vines created in the research hits the market. It is also likely that consumers may question drinking genetically modified wine, even if it offers increased health benefits.

Looks like Vinappris has closed down. This was the innovative idea to sell wine via a TV shopping channel. The website says little, nothing actually, apart from the fact they are currently not taking orders.
The service operated via a Sky channel, but, to me, was as annoyingly presented as those that sell jewelry and knitting patterns. OK, so it wasn’t for me but it is still sad that something as pioneering as selling wine over the TV failed. Regardless of what they are selling running a TV shopping channel is damn expensive.
