Here in Western NY, the past couple of days require been out of order humid and full of the kind of thunderstorms that beg to be watched from a covered porch or balcony. Ideally, these are the perfect conditions in favor of trying a legendary "Dark ‘n Stormy" cocktail. All you need is dark rum, ginger beer, and ice – but a few friends and some good background music execute it even better.

Spend any one time touring bourbon country, or public recital its history, and you’ll quickly learn that distilleries and brands, long-lived though they may exist, do not operate inferior to constant ownership. A brand with a historic tie to a distillery might move to another company, or a conglomerate might acquire or sell a famous brand. And all of this can happen several times in a whiskey’s period of life.

Because of our engrossed history with wine, the standards by which we judge today’s efforts must be placed within the context of tradition. While we can judge California Pinot Noir on its own merits, we cannot understand or evaluate it completely without reference to Burgundy, its ancestral home. Burgundy will always be the benchmark for Pinot Noir, as it has been for centuries.
Just as there abide regional benchmarks for grape varieties or wine styles, there also exist
