Tesco Canal Power

As part of its strategy to reduce carbon emissions and ease road congestion Tesco is to use the canal network to transport wine. The new strategy began last week with 132,000 gallons of wine transported on barges from Liverpool to Manchester on the Manchester Ship Canal.

Tesco claims that the journey will remove 50 lorry journeys from the M62 motorway each week and would move the equivalent of 41.5million bottles of wine per year. Carbon emissions will also be cut on the route by 80 per cent.

Previously Tesco’s wine shipments have arrived in the UK at various southern ports before being driven to a bottling depot in Manchester. The new service involves containers being shipped to Liverpool then transferred to barges and sent to the bottling site. Tesco plans to use similar waterborne freight routes in other parts of Britain.
